Epiphanie Clover Bag Review
Posted on August 5, 2013
The first time I saw an Epiphanie camera bag, I was at BlogHer in the summer of 2010. Karen Walrond, a.k.a Chookooloonks, and several other major bloggers/photographers had them, and I knew immediately that I needed one in my life too. My “lunchbox” looking camera bag was not doing it for me and I wanted more.
I browsed the styles for hours, saving up to buy the purple “Paris” bag (which Epiphanie no longer makes). When it arrived, it was much bigger than I expected and it only came with the one longer strap rather than the two that were shown online. Epiphanie apologized and immediately sent me the other strap.
Over the course of the next few months, I used my Paris bag a handful of times, so you can imagine my surprise when the clips on BOTH straps broke after just a few uses. When I called customer support, they told me they had never heard of this happening, something I now know to be false since several other people I’ve talked to had the same issue with the clips on the straps.
I contacted Epiphanie and they said that I couldn’t have a refund, but that they would send me replacement straps. I told them I was afraid the same thing would happen and I wanted an exchange for a bag that had permanently attached straps, and that is how the “Clover” came into my life.
I picked this bag for the following reasons:
1) It was large, just like my former Paris bag.
2) It would hold ALL my gear: camera w/lens attached, plus 2-3 more lenses, an off camera flash, SD cards, extra batteries, etc. AND if I wanted, my MacBook Pro (which I spilled a cup of tea on earlier this year and killed, but that’s another story entirely).
3) It had attached straps, plus the extra, longer, padded strap. I wanted attached straps because I was not going to deal with another strap issue like before.
When I got the bag, I was very happy to finally have a bag that I felt lived up to the Epiphanies that I had seen on other women.
I had my 12 year old brother snap a few photos of me with the bag so you can see sizing (because he is the only one who can operate my “big” camera and he wants to learn more about photography), but you’ll have to excuse the quality of the photos as he is just learning (but doing a great job I think!).
For sizing purposes, I am 5’3 (and apparently way tan from the summer sun).
The bag is big, but not super huge. As I said, I wanted a bag to that would hold all my gear, especially for weddings.
I love the bright pink on the inside. It makes it easy to see your gear and is just plain pretty.
This is a close up of the strap hook. This is the same hook that broke on both of my Paris bag straps, but I want to make it clear that I never had a problem with it on this bag. I am convinced that it was the shape of the other bag, super wide, that lent itself to stress on the clasps.
What I realized after getting this bag is that what I really needed was more of an everyday camera bag– you know the ones you can tote around daily and look like a purse.
I recently sold my Clover in the hopes of using the money toward the Kelly Moore B-Hobo bag, which I’ve heard great things about. I own a Kelly Moore already, which I will review soon, so I already know that I trust their quality. I can’t fully recommend Epiphanie as a brand though, because although this Clover bag is great and has never given me any issues, my negative experience with the Paris bag leaves me apprehensive of the overall quality of their straps. I do know that many people have bags from Epiphanie and love them, but I feel it is important to be honest here. If you are looking at buying an Epiphanie bag, I would say to make sure you test it out right away so that if there are any issues, you’ll know within the return window (15 days). The mistake I made was not really using my Paris much after I got it, and so when the issues arrived, it had already been a couple of months.
Sew Tamz Custom Camera Strap Review
Posted on August 2, 2013
I’ve been wanting a new camera strap for ages. The strap that comes with most DSLRs (regardless of brand) is functional, but not very comfortable or stylish. Whenever I looked at the straps sold in the camera stores, they were always very manly looking– black or grey with added padding but not much else.
A couple of months ago I noticed that there were more and more custom camera straps showing up around the interwebs, and I wanted one. After a few weeks of searching, I came across Sew Tamz’s DSLR straps, and I was immediately impressed by several things:
1) These were actual custom camera straps, not just camera strap covers.
2) The padding inside is neoprene, the super squishy stuff they make wetsuits out of.
3) The strap is longer and meant to be used as a long neck strap or a crossbody strap. This was the first I had seen this and I knew it would be perfect for me. Whenever I am not shooting, I tend to put my arm through my camera strap and wear it to the side, but the Nikon straps aren’t long enough to wear it that way and still shoot (you can see how the cross body is worn on the Sew Tamz site by clicking here).
Finally, after reading everything, I ordered my custom strap from Sew Tamz. Well, it came today and I could not be happier (please excuse the iPhone photos)!
The strap is gorgeous! I custom designed mine and it makes me so, so happy.
Look! There is my name!
One cool feature that I wasn’t looking for, but is so nice to have, is the quick release. The straps “detach” and form a mini hand strap for your camera.
If you compare this new strap with my old standard Nikon one, you can see the difference in size and padding. This one feels plush because it is made out of super soft fabric that goes against your neck (it’s kind of “furry”) and has that neoprene core I was talking about. Wearing it made my camera feel light as a feather!
I haven’t used my strap on a shoot yet, but I am really excited to do so. I know it will make long events, like weddings, so much more comfortable. I think it will also be great for travelling when I tend to have my camera on my neck a lot. Overall I am very happy with my custom strap.
I was not compensated to write this review; I just like to give genuine feedback that might help others who are looking into a product or service.
Ilany & Ray: Hugh Taylor Birch State Park Children’s Session
Posted on August 1, 2013
I had the pleasure of shooting these two adorable kiddos at a new location, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. This large state park is located in downtown Fort Lauderdale right across from the beach off of Sunrise Blvd. The first thing that surprised me was that the park was huge! I spent about 30 mins before they arrived driving the 2.5 mile (one way) loop around the park and finding all the little incredible spaces that were tucked away off the road.
Our first stop was the children’s park. Ilany is 10 years old and Ray is almost 3, so I knew I wanted to take them to a spot where they could play and interact. They loved the swings and it was a good way to get them loosened up!
Their mom, Evelyn, calls this collage “attitude!” I crack up everytime I look at Ray’s “angry” face. He’s just such a cutie!

Next, we headed to the middle of the park where a massive, 100 year old Banyan tree sits.
Lastly, just as the sun was leaving the sky, we spent some time letting the kids play in the sand & water, which both of them loved.
It was a fun afternoon capturing Ilany & Ray in a great Florida nature spot. A big thank you to their mommy, my good friend Evelyn, for trusting me to capture her awesome kids!
National Dance Day: Boynton Beach Inlet
Posted on July 29, 2013
Saturday, July 27th was National Dance Day, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate then to go and take some test pictures with my gorgeous sister.
We headed to the Boynton Beach Inlet Saturday evening, even though it had been raining all day and the weather didn’t look good. Luckily, the weather actually held up and the light was incredible!
First, we spent some time on the “land” side, experimenting with all the great trees that can be found in the park.
Next we headed to the beach side to take a few more shots with the ocean for our backdrop.

The inlet is a gorgeous location and I can’t wait to shoot there for in August for my End of Summer Mini Sessions!

{Sneak Peek} Melissa + Jon Married: Sunrise, FL
Posted on July 14, 2013
Yesterday I shot the wedding of Melissa + Jon, one of the nicest and most loving couples I have ever seen. I knew from their engagement session just how perfect Melissa + Jon are together, but nothing could have prepared me for the love that was flowing from everyone at yesterday’s festivities. Not only are Melissa + Jon an amazing couple, but their family and friends were also an incredibly loving and spirited group of people.
The weather yesterday was awful– it was rain, thunder, and lightning from the time the bride walked down the aisle until well after the wedding was over– but you wouldn’t have known it from the spirits of everyone in attendance. Melissa, Jon, and I snuck away for a few intimate bride/groom shots and we found a spot out of the rain with great light. I love how these two images capture just how happy and in love these two are!
I can’t wait to share more of this amazing couple’s special day!
Carla: Bethesda by the Sea Ballet Session
Posted on June 17, 2013
When I was 2 and a 1/2 years old, my mother put me in my first ballet/tap combo class in New York and I was hooked. Since then, dance has always been a passion of mine, so whenever I get a chance to photograph a dancer, I consider it a joy.
Carla is a dancer at Boca Ballet Studio and one of the most gorgeous dancers I have ever known. Okay, I will admit my bias: she is my little sister, but that doesn’t change the fact that she is so extremely talented and beautiful.
For her 16th birthday, we headed to Bethesda by the Sea, an Episcopal Church located on Palm Beach, for a ballet shoot in one of the prettiest locations I know.
See? I told you, gorgeous.
I am ridiculously proud of the dancer and person that she is becoming.
Thank you, Carla, for being the best little sister and model a photographer could ever ask for!
What camera do you use?
Posted on June 10, 2013
“Your pictures are great! What camera do you use?”
I think every photographer (probably in the history of ever) has had some variation of this said to them at some time. The people who say this mean well, I know, but in all honesty, the question drives most photographers crazy. Why? Because the photographer takes the photo, not the camera. I’ll give you an example.
I am always the family photographer and so I am consequently very rarely in any photographs at family events (a role I am happy to take on). Sometimes I will want a photo of myself and another family member and give my camera to someone else to take a picture. Nearly every single time I do this, the photo doesn’t turn out. It is blurry, unfocused, or the composition is completely off. Now, I’ve taught my immediate family the basics of taking a photo with my camera (my 12 year old brother and 16 year old sister are the best at it) and so I can trust them to take a decent photo, but that’s about it.
Here is the thing about photography: the camera is only as good as the photographer who wields it. Give someone who has no idea what they’re doing a $6K Nikon D4, and I guarantee you they will not be able to take a decent photo with it, yet someone who does know what they are doing can take amazing pictures with an iPhone.
One of the very first questions I received after starting this site and accompanying social media (follow me on facebook and instagram!) was the following: “What kind of camera and lens do you shoot with?”
Here is what I think everyone should know about cameras and lenses:
- Buy the best camera you can afford, but remember that the lens is way more important that the camera, so if the choice is between a cheaper camera & better lens vs. better camera & cheap lens, pick the first option.
- Don’t buy the kit. Most entry level and consumer DSLR cameras come with an 18-55mm “kit lens” but you don’t have to buy it. Buy the camera body only from Amazon, BHPhoto, or Adorama.
- Once you have your camera, I think there are two lenses that are crucial to starting out. A “walk around” everything lens like an 18-250mm and a 50mm (get the 1.4 if you can afford it, if not the 1.8 is great too). Although the big names like Nikon and Canon make these lenses, 3rd parties like Sigma and Tamron make great options for Nikon and Canon cameras too. Read the reviews out there. Ken Rockwell does great/ honest reviews, but there are others out there.
- Nikon vs. Canon, it really doesn’t matter. Get the camera YOU feel comfortable with. Before you order your camera, go to one of those camera stores and play with the cameras. Hold them, take pictures with them, ask questions, and see your options. Sure, I’m biased. I am a Nikon girl who thinks the shutter on Canon cameras sounds like a toy, but don’t let my opinion sway you. Get what you want.
- Once you have your camera, learn it! There are manuals you can buy, classes you can take, and online tutorials you can watch that will help you learn everything you need to know about your camera.
The most important thing is that you get out there and take pictures if that is what you want to do. If all you have is your iPhone and you can’t afford anything else, so what?! Go and take amazing pictures with you iPhone. Study the elements of photography. Learn the basics about composition, lighting, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. There is so much published online that can help you teach yourself the basics. From there, practice! Follow the blogs of photographers you love, join online photography forums (like this one), and never stop learning.
Melissa + Jon Engaged: Coconut Grove
Posted on June 5, 2013
Melissa & Jon are the kind of couple every photographer dreams of photographing: fun & vibrant, with a love story as sweet as their personalities.
Melissa & Jon met when they were both out for a night of enjoyment in Coconut Grove (a small neighborhood in Miami known for its unique restaurants, bars, and culture) at one of the most famous local bars, Sandbar. For their engagement shoot, we thought it would be fun to spend the afternoon revisiting the places where they first met as a celebration of their love.
We started the session at Sandbar, whose owners and patrons were more than happy to humor us by letting Melissa & Jon take some photos in the exact location where they met: at the bar.
Melissa & Jon’s personality really showed as we continued to another local bar, Moe’s, which is known for its “hunting lodge” decor. This couple couldn’t help but take a photo with the famous bear!
The Grove is also known for its lush greens and eclectic culture and this served as the perfect backdrop for more romantic photos that gave Melissa + Jon the chance to express just how much they love each other.
This is by far my favorite series of the day. This exact spot is where Jon kissed Melissa for the first time! It was touching to allow them to relive that moment together in front of the iconic center of the Grove, CocoWalk.
Lastly, we spent some time in CocoWalk capturing the vibrancy of their love and the atmosphere.
Of course we had to get a shot of that ring!
Melissa & Jon were such a joy to work with and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding in July. I know that it will be filled with fun and love, just the way they are.
Thank you Melissa & Jon for allowing us to capture your love!

On My Own
Posted on June 5, 2013
In May 2009, I began a photography business with one of my best friends, David. The two of us shared a love of photography and often spent the weekends visiting both local and far off spots working on our craft. When our friends and family started asking us to do portraits and events for them, we knew that something more could come from our shared hobby. From May 2009 to May 2012, we operated a successful freelance photography business. It wasn’t our primary job, he went back to school to become an engineer and I kept teaching high school English, but it was something that made us very happy.
For three years ExArte Photography captured weddings, families, portraits in Miami; and this partnership was something we both thought would last forever. But as life has shown, “the best laid schemes of mice and men go often asunder (Robert Burns).” David has decided to work on his career as an engineer, something that is inevitably taking him out of South Florida in the near future, and I have decided to move back to Palm Beach County to be closer to my family.
So where does that leave me? Well, taking photos and capturing memories is one of my two passions in life, the other being a high school English teacher. This passion for helping others create lifelong memories through photography is not something that is going to ever leave me, and so I have begun a new venture on my own. Camile Teresa Photography is me. My style, my vision, and my creativity. At first I was nervous to begin this venture, after all, my entire professional photographic life had been in a partnership with David. What would it be like to be my own business? To brand myself rather than a company? To know that I was the only person who would be responsible for everything: business and creativity.
Slowly those fears fell away and a new emotion presented itself: excitement. I could rebrand my photography my way and the only person responsible for my success would be me. I could focus more on the type of photography that made me happy and spend my energy building relationships with clients in my new area. I would still be a photographer and I would still get to practice the art that I love.
I sincerely welcome you to Camile Teresa Photography and hope that you will share in my experiences with me. This blog will serve as a way for me to stay connected with my clients and community. It will also be a way for me to document my journey into the world of being a solo photographer. Though I still plan to work with partners on large scale events and will rely on the relationships I’ve built with other photographers when needed, I am excited to begin working as my own brand. I think I’m going to like it.
